This series explores personal thoughts experiences of various people throughout the mandatory quarantine due to COVID-19. It also addresses the hypotheses of experts on what is to come and how they expect this period of isolation to affect our society in the long run. I’ve created a short series of images that visually represent what I have learned from my research, interviews, and personal experiences with quarantine.
In the information I gathered from the project, the first element I wanted to bring to attention was showing positivity despite the trials and hardships. I realized that some people have chosen to let their world to continue to cave in around them, while others have stood up and made the best of the situation. Life truly is what you make it. I photographed myself in a field at the top of a ladder holding a paint brush and used that image as the base for my edits. To convey the terror of the virus, I deepened shadows and desaturated the color. I showed the light and positivity of those I’ve observed and interviewed by increasing the exposure and saturation around me to make it appear that everything I had touched had bloomed and brightened. These positive forces in the world are truly carrying us and keeping hope alive that things will be better. Throughout the series, I have gone through similar processes to visually convey the good and bad throughout this period. My overarching goal for this project is to let each audience member connect their own experiences to the work and see themselves in one or more image. I also hope to spread awareness of what is happening, whether it be showing where the good can be found or to see what might be tearing us down. I want my audience to reflect on themselves as an influence and feel inspired to be an influence of positivity instead of negativity. Finally, I want viewers to feel united and realize that this is something we are all experiencing.
